With the establishment of and recent changes to regulations such as the 5th Anti-Money Laundering Directive in Europe, Special Administrations Anti-Money Laundering and CounterTerrorist Financing Ordinance in Hong Kong and FinCen’s Explicit Customer Due Diligence requirements in the U.S., understanding beneficial ownership of the companies with whom you do business is key to assessing the full picture of risk.

Though this information is often requested of third parties and customers before business dealings begin, validating customer-provided data can be difficult and time consuming.

The Data and Workflow Solution

Beneficial ownership data from Dun & Bradstreet (D&B) on approximately 69 million entities is now available through Dow Jones’ risk database and research tool, RiskCenter. These 69 million entities share approximately 80 million individual owners and 20 million entity owners including from countries where there is no formal corporate register.

Supplemented by public sources such as company documents and public, the data also indicates how far removed the various owners are from the principal entity in question to provide the ‘degree of separation.’

Coverage Detail

• Type of owner (Entity/Individual)
• Name of owner (either the natural person or entity name)
• Country of owner
• Whether owner is a beneficiary or not
• Degree of separation (Direct or Indirect)
• Legal form (the legal form or structure of the business as registered with government authorities, e.g. Private Limited Liability Company)
• Status (an indicator of whether the company is still active, according to the relevant company register and other official sources)
• Ownership percentage

Access and Scope

D&B UBO data is incorporated into existing entity profiles within the Dow Jones risk database where possible for convenient and efficient information gathering. The option to view ownership data presents directly within the Dow Jones RiskCenter interface as part of the typical lookup experience.

In cases where beneficial ownership is sought for a company that isn’t listed in the Dow Jones database, access is provided to D&B’s entire UBO dataset of 69 million companies.
